Raptor2 Events

Overview

Raptor2 Events is a custom WordPress plugin that replaces a third-party plugin “Event List” by a 3rd party. That old plugin was no longer maintained and was not current enough to continue using.

The new plugin brings new features and compatibility with the current WordPress editor “Gutenberg”.

The new plugin is backwards compatible with the old in most respects. Existing events are handled. Many features of the old plugin that were never used on my sites are no longer supported.

The new plugin is designed to be used with the custom Raptor2 Theme. Together, they enable separate sections to display:

  • Events Today
  • Events Tomorrow
  • Events This Week (2-7 days out)
  • Upcoming Events (> 7 days out)

Recurring Events

This new feature allows a weekly event to be set up as recurring on a certain day of the week. When used with the Raptor2 Theme, recurring events are listed in sequence with date-specific events, but are only shown one time, rather than repeated every week.

Recurring Event Overrides

This is best explaiined in two use cases:

  • A chef has offered to cook burgers for Joker Poker night in two weeks on May 23. You need to add info about burgers to the event for that night.
  • Joker Poker is cancelled next week on May 16. You need to clearly announce that the event is cancelled for that night.

When you create an event on a specific date, you can specify that it overrides a certain recurring event. So, to handle the above use cases, you would make two additional Joker Poker events on the 2 dates(without changing the recurring Joker Poker) and specify that they override Joker Poker.

Now, when used with the Raptor2 Theme, two things happen:

  • During the week of the recurring event, when it would normally be shown as an upcoming event, the recurring event will be replaced by the override event. Until that week, the recurring event is listed as normal.
  • The override event is listed in upcoming events.

In the above example, you now might see three events:

  • May 9: Recurring event listed as normal.
  • May 16: The override event showing the cancellation.
  • May 23: The override event showing the burgers.

To be clear, if there were no overrides, you would see the recurring event on May 9, and no specific event listed for May 16 or May 23.
